Desta: The Memories Between

Desta: The Memories Between is a character-driven rogue-like, featuring an immersive story, strategic turn-based tactics and… a metaphorical ball-game? The story is one of broken relationships, words left unsaid and the chance to explore your own dreams for answers.

On this project, I worked with Ustwo Games as a Senior Game Designer. I worked with the team from early pre-production through to release where I was mainly responsible for special ability and character design, ai balancing as well as level and boss encounter design.

 

I worked in miro to paper-prototype and test different characters and abilities before they were taken forward for implementation. This allowed us to better assess design ideas and account for possible edge cases before implementation.

Since Desta has a rogue-lite structure we had to look for different ways to introduce variety into the game so each run wasn't always the same. One of the ways in which we went about this was to create 2-3 level variations per stage that utilised an alternative layout but used the same opponent composition. This was so that players didn't encounter the exact same level every run. The player's ability choice is also another thing that would lead to encounters playing out different.
